What To Consider When Designing Packaging

Brand design is everything to your business and creating striking and beautiful packaging to showcase your products is just as important. You want to package your products in a way that sells your business, showing the best parts and leaving a positive impression on the buyer. No matter how amazing your product is, if it doesn’t look the part it won't sell. One of the first steps you must consider when designing packaging is what kind you want to use. Do you want a box, a bag, a tube or a bottle? How will this look on a shelf? Does it fit in with the rest of your product range?

Materials and finishes can make or break packaging. You could have the most beautiful design but if you choose the wrong finish, it can ruin all your hard work. Take into consideration the different material options available to you and decide on a finish before you complete the design process. You should also do a test run of how your product will look on a shelf. If you have other products, you want the packaging to have some cohesion that makes it recognisably yours. Make mock-ups of all your designs and set them out to help visualise the finished product.

Something you mustn’t forget is all the content that has to legally appear on your packaging. This includes ingredient lists, information and warnings. Copy that appears on the packaging must be legible and easy to read, as well as visible and easily accessible. Finding a typeface and colour combination that allows your product information to be easily seen is important and can help you avoid issues later down the line.

This is another step that mockups can help you work out as you can adjust as necessary until you find the perfect combination. A design or marketing agency will be able to run through these steps with you until you hit the nail on the head and find the best options.
