Packaging Design Trends That Are Going Out Of Style
Design trends are constantly changing and evolving in the print, packaging and web design spaces. And although many trends are circular and seem to come back into style every few years, there are many that fall off and never resurface. Recent years have seen massive changes in packaging design and as the space constantly grows and changes, we are seeing more and more familiar styles and design choices fall out of fashion. Many of these have been dominant in the industry for years so watching them phase out paves the way for new and exciting concepts.
Minimalist Design
One of these is minimalism. For many years brands that adopted sleek, simple packaging seemed to dominate almost any industry. Neutral and pastel colour schemes, barely-there typefaces and simplistic logos were seen almost everywhere. However, maximalism is back in business and many brands are now ditching their powder tones for bold primary and neon shades and there has been a huge spike in the use of fun, exciting typefaces.
Plastic Packaging
Another packaging design trend which seems to be losing interest is plastic. This is evident across all aspects of packaging, from the products themselves to the boxes they come in. In the ever-growing push for sustainability, many brands are choosing to ditch plastic for paper, cardboard or in some cases wood. This makes for a far more eco-friendly, environmentally focussed option that many consumers will choose over plastic-covered alternatives.
Touch And Texture
And finally, we are seeing a decline in the use of textures. For a long time, mixed textured packaging such as boxes, cans and bottles seemed to be seen everywhere. However, many brands appear to now be focussing more on creating fun decals and colour schemes to attract their customers visually rather than how the product packaging feels. Trading mixed textures for fun typography and visuals.
