Most businesses know the importance of having a good website, but it could actually end up costing them significantly if they don’t.

This was shown with a recent study by Storyblock, which found that nearly two-thirds of customers ditch their baskets when buying on websites that have poor user experience. Consequently, e-commerce companies typically lose five purchases for every consumer every year. It also revealed that 42 per cent of website users make a decision whether to stay on a website within the first ten seconds. As much as one-fifth decide within the first five seconds. Storyblok’s chief executive officer Dominik Angerer said: “Consumers want easy-to-navigate, intuitively designed, and fast-loading websites.”

However, he noted: “a lot of e-commerce websites are falling short.” When it comes to improving user experience, companies could improve the choice of payment options, as 37 per cent of visitors cited this as a reason for leaving. Slow loading speeds was also a big factor, with 33 per cent claiming they abandoned the website as it was taking too long to load. More than a third (37 per cent) were also put off by poor navigation and layout, proving just how important good website design is. Other ways to make your website more engaging and interesting is through exciting graphics, informative content, and excellent images or videos.
