Whatever we want to look for on the internet, whether it’s a recipe, wanting to book a hotel, interior decor inspiration, or silly games to kill some time, there will be a wealth of websites that cater to our needs.

However, not all websites are the same, as some will be immersive and keep us interested and perhaps lead us to make a purchase, while others will want us to move on to the next website within seconds. If you’re wanting to improve your website, we have a look at some tips and tricks for engaging website design.

User-friendly Navigation

Once visitors land on your website, you want to ensure they stay there. One means to achieve this is to be sure they can find what they are looking for. A visible search bar is a good idea for people who may not have the patience to explore menus.

However, a visible navigation bar is a must-have, where users can find the different product or service categories under drop-down menus.

Appealing Visuals that Suit your Target Group

‘You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time’, said 15th-century poet John Lydgate, and while he certainly wasn’t referring to website design, the same rule applies.

Your website should not be for everyone. Certain designs will appeal to Millennials but could be confusing for older generations. For example, if your business is fashion and accessories, you will likely want to target your website to women aged between 18 and 40, while a website for an accountancy firm should look clean, crisp, professional and formal.

Optimise your Site for Mobile Use

Over half of all internet browsing is now done on mobile devices, meaning that ensuring your website is mobile-friendly is mandatory. If your website is difficult to access or read on a smartphone or is plagued by annoying pop-ups, visitors will leave and go to a competitor’s website.

Whatever the users tap on should change to fit their screen perfectly. If you have different items on your site, for example, games that open in a new window, you should make sure your online game design is also flawless and will not cause any usability issues.

Call to Action

A call to action button or CTA is your first step towards the sale. It does not necessarily mean a sale but it is the first action the customers can take that may lead to the sale.

The CTA should be clearly visible as soon as the customers open the webpage and ideally they shouldn’t have to scroll down to find the CTA button. These CTAs also help indecisive users decide what to do next. If there was nothing to prompt them to act now, they could leave your site without a sale or a promise of a sale.
