What The World’s Most Iconic Logo Designs Can Teach Us

A great logo can encapsulate the spirit of a business in a way that withstands the test of time. But just how do you go about capturing this elusive quality to create the perfect signifier for your brand? It can help to take inspiration from the most successful examples in recent history.

Coca-Cola

The classic Coca-Cola logo has changed relatively little since its first inception way back in 1887. The distinctive cursive font flows with cheery optimism and energy, but also manages to look elegant and classy, lending it a cross-generational appeal. The unvarying use of the red and white colour scheme helps to underline the confident and vibrant stance.

To create a font that is unique and eye-catching, try to avoid using a ready-made design. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel; maybe start by tracing a font which matches the tone of your brand, and then try adapting or exaggerating elements until you have something that speaks for itself and creates an emotional response.

Apple

The first Apple computer logo was designed in 1976, and was nothing like the iconic symbol we all know today. In fact, the very literal interpretation of Isaac Newton sitting under a tree with the fruit about to drop on his head, goes against many of the principles of good logo design, being hard to scale down, and fussy and detailed.

Steve Jobs soon discarded it for something that better reflected the modern nature of his computers, and was easy to scale. The graphic designer Rob Janoff was hired, and came up with the simple apple with a small leaf on top and a bite out of the right-hand side. Originally rainbow-striped, it is now either chrome, black, or white.

It’s a classic lesson in simplicity with a slight quirk to make it memorable. The Apple logo is sophisticated and yet sleek and accessible, just as the brand aims to be.
